Prep Baseball Kansas features Wichita Trinity Academy’s baseball program is gearing up for another competitive season, fueled by a blend of promising young talent and experienced returners. The Knights will rely heavily on six players from Kansas Premier’s teams, including five from Coach Baty’s 16U squad and one from Coach McNew’s 15U team. This mix of four sophomores and two freshmen brings a fresh energy and high-level experience that could keep Trinity Academy among the top contenders.

The team’s roster features six returning position players and six returning pitchers, providing a solid foundation. The challenge lies in filling the shoes of key upperclassmen who graduated, but the Knights’ depth and leadership potential offer hope for continued success.

Key Returning Players to Watch

The backbone of the Knights’ lineup and pitching staff comes from the 2028 class, who showed impressive performances last season. Here are some of the top returners expected to make a big impact:

  • Cam Killgore (2028) – Catcher

Standing 5'10" and weighing 205 pounds, Killgore hit an outstanding .398 as a freshman with 49 RBIs. His ability to handle pitchers and contribute offensively makes him a cornerstone for the Knights.

  • Bryton Baty (2028) – Shortstop/Pitcher

At 6'0" and 185 pounds, Baty is a dual-threat player. He hit .349 and stole 30 bases last season, showcasing speed and agility. His versatility on the field is a major asset.

  • Caleb Back (2028) – Pitcher

Back’s pitching stats are impressive: 7 wins, 1 loss, 3 saves, and only 5 total runs allowed all year. His control and consistency will be crucial for the Knights’ pitching rotation.

  • Brody Lee (2028) – Pitcher

Lee, a left-handed pitcher standing 5'11" and 180 pounds, posted a 4-0 record last season. His undefeated record highlights his reliability on the mound.

These players bring experience and proven skill, setting a strong tone for the team’s performance.

Exciting Newcomers Ready to Make an Impact

The Knights are also welcoming two standout freshmen who are expected to contribute immediately:

  • Bryce Christiansen (2029) – Pitcher/Utility

Christiansen is a 6'2", 180-pound right-hander with a powerful arm. He is expected to join the pitching rotation from day one, adding depth and firepower.

  • Mason Frieze (2029) – Outfielder

Frieze, standing 5'10" and weighing 165 pounds, is known for his speed and defensive skills. He will start in the outfield as a freshman and is ready to chase down balls and create scoring opportunities.

These newcomers bring fresh energy and talent, which will be vital as the team adjusts to the loss of some key upperclassmen.

Challenges and Opportunities Ahead

Coach Matt Baty acknowledges the unique makeup of the roster. With only three upperclassmen, many might see the team’s youth as a weakness. However, last season’s experience of starting five freshmen in the postseason shows that the young players can handle pressure and perform at a high level.

The departure of Josiah at shortstop and Braden in center field leaves a gap. Together, they stole over 60 bases and were key offensive and defensive catalysts. Replacing their production entirely is unlikely, but the team has pieces to fill those roles.

Coach Baty emphasizes the need for leadership from both young players and upperclassmen who may not see as much playing time. The Knights will rely on:

  • Sophomores stepping up to build on their freshman experience

  • Upperclassmen providing guidance and setting examples off the field

  • Newcomers embracing their roles and contributing immediately

This combination of leadership and talent will determine how far the Knights can go this season.

What This Means for the Season

The Knights’ mix of returning players and newcomers creates a dynamic team with potential. The strong pitching staff, led by Back, Lee, and Christiansen, will be a key factor in controlling games. Offensively, players like Killgore, Frieze, and Baty will look to drive in runs and create scoring chances.

The team’s speed and defense will also play a big role, especially as they try to compensate for the loss of stolen bases from last year’s upperclassmen. Fresh legs like Frieze’s in the outfield will help maintain defensive strength while also contributing to significant run production.

If the 2028 class continues to improve and the freshmen rise to the challenge, Wichita Trinity Academy has a real shot at competing for another title.

Building a Winning Culture

Beyond stats and talent, the Knights are focused on building a strong team culture. Coach Baty’s approach highlights:

  • Resilience: Young players have already faced tough postseason competition and learned from it.

  • Accountability: Everyone on the roster is expected to contribute and lead in some way.

  • Teamwork: Filling gaps left by key players requires collaboration and trust.

This culture will help the Knights navigate the ups and downs of the season and stay focused on their goals.
